Puget Sound, Washington

With this visit to the Puget Sound Refinery, I finally finished my tour of Shell's 7 US refineries. I started with the Deer Park, Texas refinery in August 2004. Puget Sound was by far the most scenic of the refineries.

If your not familiar with Washington State, especially Puget Sound area, then you really need plan it as vacation. The scenic views are amazing. I stayed at the rustic La Conner Inn pictured above. La Conner is a quaint touristy little town that shuts down promptly at 8pm (sometimes earlier if its a slow night). I found this out when I rolled into town looking for dinner. Everything was closed, so I went to the hotel to ask for suggestions, but was told that nothing would be open that late. However, the hotel staff was 'hometownish' and brought me something from the hotel kitchen--2 hard-boiled eggs, a bagel, and juice. Ahhh I love small towns!

I wish Amie and the girls had come with me on this trip. They would have really liked La Conner. It’s quiet, except for the gobbling wild turkeys, which they would have appreciated more than me. This was the view looking up the street from my hotel.

I have to comment on the food. It just wasn't that good--the taste and the selection. We had to be conscious to leave our work early if we wanted dinner before the shops closed, and it seemed as though everything was either a seafood restaurant, a meat and potato restaurant, or a combo of the two. Each night we'd hit a different restaurant, be disappointed, and hope for better luck. It was so bad that I stopped cleaning off my plate, which—if you know me—I don't do unless it’s REAAALY bad food! Well, finally on the last night we ate at the restaurant connected to the hotel--The Nell Thorn. Wow! I’m not sure if it’s because I was soo hungry by that point, or if they really did have good food, but I had a lamb dish that I think beat out all (one) other lamb dishes that I’ve ever had. I ended up ordering a desert to go because I was on a roll…that was a bad idea. Obesity is a problem here is the US. Posted by Picasa
